“You should rest.”, Markus said softly. He knew using magic without ever having before would be tiring, and exhausting. And their journey up to here had been tiring as well.

Nox agreed and yawned again, feeling the tiredness wash over her more.

She reached into her pack and pulled out a blanket.

“I have a spare one if you want” she said through another yawn. She laid down her self and wrapped up in her blanket, getting cosy and staring at the stars.

“I’m fine, thank you.”, Markus replied, smiling softly. He had traveled light the whole time, so he was used to it by now. And he had a plush companion now too -he liked to sleep with a plush, if he was honest.

“Sleep well, Nox.”.

“No.”, Markus replied and shook his head lightly. “I’m not very skilled at crafts like these. Other than my magic for plushs, I can’t make anything.”, he chuckled softly, smiling. “I had someone else make it for me. To fit with my plushs.”.

Soft golden freckles covering his cheeks were able to be noticed in the warm light.

“Not where I’m from.”, Markus replied, smile soft. He understood her concern. He had been met with a lot of suspicion by these people here while travelling.

“I can’t speak for the entire land of course, but the places I know are rather open-minded. Though people will be shocked to hear you’ve grown up without magic in your life.”, he told her. He had been shocked too, arriving here and not seeing a drop of magic. It had almost scared him away then.

Nox’s shoulders relaxed when Markus said that. She was glad she’d be going somewhere where she’d feel welcome and laughed quietly at the idea of seeing shocked faces when they found out about her non magical life.

“I’m sure I’ll get taught a lot about what I’m missing”

It was then she felt an urge to try her magic again, a quiet drive inside her soul told her to give it another go so she stayed still and concentrated, this time keeping her eyes open as she put her fingertips on the grass in front of her.

“There’ll be people willing to teach you better than I could, surely.”, Markus hummed, smiling. He stayed silent as she did, instead hugging his plush and nuzzling against it. It nuzzled back into him.

He missed home, and making plushs for people. He had made a few while here, but only for some children that seemed lonely.

Nox nodded, smiling softly.

“Whoever made it must be just as good at you with their magic.” Nox imagined a tailor weaving their magic to make Markus his coat and a jolt of renewed excitement rushed through her stomach and chest. She bounced a little “I can’t wait to see your home, Markus.” She saw his golden freckles in the glow of the fire and they seemed to add a touch more magic to him “It must be a great place if people like you come from it. Can you tell me about it?”

Markus chuckled softly, smiling warmly. He liked talking to Nox, hearing her so happy about something that was so normal for him.

“My homeland is filled with magic. Everyone knows of it, and almost everyone uses their magic. We do a lot of things with magic, and a lot of things have magic in them. Like my plush animals. I have a friend who can create flowers, however he likes. I like to use them for my plushs.”, he told Nox, voice soft as he thought about his home.

“It’s really rare to find someone without a home or family to go to. Most people are really friendly and kind, though of course there are some bad ones. Everyone could use their magic for evil, if they wanted to after all.”

“I can ride a horse too.”, Markus told Nox. They could save some money instead of getting a cart. It wouldn’t be too hard to find someone Markus could trust to bring the horse back here, then.

“I come from a little further away from here. It’s quite a long travel, normally.”, he admitted, chuckling lightly.

“Thank you.”, Markus opened his eyes, looking around. He didn’t have normal eyes. He had lost his eyes when he had been a child, but had been raised by a mirror maker. They gave him “eyes”. Markus didn’t want anyone to be freaked out by them, or think even more weirdly about him.

He could use his plushs well enough to help him out with the lack of sight when he kept his eyes closed, and had gained a well enough sense of his surroundings to get around.

He lead them, telling Nox where to go and what to look out for. They’d be traveling for at least three days to get to his home.

Night fell on the first day of their journey and Nox set up camp. She got a fire going and started to cook. It was a simple meal but it would satisfy the hunger from the day’s travel.

Silence fell between them for a while before she spoke.

“Thank you for taking me away, Markus.” She said, softly.

Markus had settled on the ground, his plush on his lap again. He was content in the silence, the slight chill of the night was nice, especially with his coat. His plush didn’t seem to tire, though comfortable and content on his lap.

“Of course.”, he said softly and smiled lightly. “I’m very glad to have met you.”.

Markus listened curiously to all Nox did, not bothered by anyone staring at him weirdly. He was used to it, in this country at the very least.

“No thank you. Do you need help?”, Markus replied and shook his head lightly. He gently laid a hand on the horse, and after a few moments peeked open the eye Nox wasn’t able to see, and easily got up then. He did offer Nox a hand to help pull her up.

Nox let Markus pull her up. She sat in front of him and took the reigns. With a gentle pat and a polite request, the horse moved forward at a steady pace.

“Just tell me if we need to change direction in good time, Markus” she said as they set off. Her excitement grew at the prospect of seeing a new land and one full of magic too.

“I thought I was going to ride?”, Markus laughed softly, but let her. What was he to do, if she suddenly decided to take the reigns.

“If you want my opinion on where to go, don’t look back at me please.”, he said then. If she had sat behind him it wouldn’t have been a problem, but he didn’t much mind either way.
