Little Sapling

Elvin took the bread from her, curious. “So you put things on bread to make it taste better?”, he asked, trying to understand humans a little more. He did curiously try it, though he wasn’t that big a fan of cheese.

“Eating seems like a weird concept to me.”, he hummed, giving her the bread back.

“Mh.”, Elvin nodded lightly. Things he had never heard about! He carefully tore off some bread and tried it on its own, humming softly. It was interesting, and he liked that!

“I like new things.”, he hummed with a smile. He was most curious about the fruits, taking a grape and trying it. He took the orange, curiously looking it over.
“Your supposed to do something with it first before eating, right?”, he asked. He didn’t know about peeling things, but the skin of the orange didn’t feel like you should eat it.

Elvin curiously looked at his own orange again, carefully pulling out a segment. Huh! This was really interesting. He curiously bit into it, making a face at the taste.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t really like it.”, he said, looking a bit apologetic over to Nox.

Nox giggled at the face he made and reached out to take the orange out of his hand. She saw the apologetic look and smiled softly at him.

“It’s alright, I’m not offended. It’s quite a strong taste, especially of you’re not used to it.” She said “there’s plenty here you can enjoy.”

“What else did you have? Cheese, right?”, Elvin curiously reached for what she had told him earlier was cheese. He wondered how that tasted like. So he curiously took a small piece of it to try, humming lightly.

“The bread is still the best for now.”, he said and chuckled softly.

Nox giggled at his curiousuty, finding it endearing. She loved how he was willing to try the food she had brought. She took an orange for herself and demonstrated what to do.

“You peel off the outer part to get to the edible bit” she peeled hers to show him what to do.

Elvin watched curiously, humming and nodding along. He carefully tried to get the orange peeled too, though needed a bit before he got an opening to start peeling.

“It smells really strange.”, he hummed. “It’s not too bad.”. He looked curiously at the peeled fruit, looking to Nox to see how she’d eat it. He knew about apples and how they were eaten, was this the same?

Elvin was surprised by the hug, but happily hugged her back, smiling.
“Oh! I would love to see them!”, he replied, curious what she might have brought him. He didn’t know a lot of things, especially from the villages. Sometimes people gifted the forest things which he took -and trinkets which he decorated his branches with.

“I’m very curious.”, he said and chuckled softly.

Nox chuckled as she pulled out the blanket.

“Then you can literally feed your curiosity with the stuff I’ve brought along” she laid the blanket down near the lake before sitting down and patting a space near her.

She unpacked the food she had bought from the stalls apart from the chocolate, she wanted to save that for last.

“Help yourself, Elvin”

Elvin sat down with her, curiously watching. So she had brought him food! He was always curious about trying that, since he didn’t need any food to survive. He lived for as long as his tree did after all.

“And what did you bring?”, he asked, curiously picking up the bread, looking it over.

Elvin was happily walking through the forest, talking the the animals and trees, to the flowers and the wind. Not long and he was humming, soft songs the wind carried in its breeze. He loved music, humming and singing with the birds, and what he heard of children playing in the forest.

He was very happy as he made his way easily through the thicket, softly singing a song that carried through the trees, adding to the birds’ trilling and rustling of leafs.

The market was bustling with people but none noticed Nox and the little bird on her shoulder as she walked through. She stopped at a few stalls and picked up some food that Elvin may have not have tasted before: fresh bread, fruits not found in the forest, cheese and some sweeter treats such as candy and Nox’s favourite which was chocolate. She also bought some more animal friendly food such as nuts and seeds.

She loaded up the pack with the food as well as a blanket they could sit on and made her way to the forest. She stopped as they got further in and let the little bird take the lead so they could get the Elvin.

Soon they were back in the opening, the lake shimmered in the morning sunlight and Nox saw plenty of animals drinking peacefully from it.

“Elvin?”

Elvin perked up when he felt Nox enter the forest. He smiled and happily hopped through the trees, easily fazing through them, never getting tired of being a spirit. He easily hopped out of a tree near Nox right when she called for him, smiling brightly at her.

“Hello Nox!”, he smiled, walking over to her. The day was good, and he was comfortable. Nothing bad had happened so far, it was a quiet day in general. So he was all the more happy to see Nox again.

“I’m sure they will, won’t you?”, Elvin smiled, looking at the bird. It tweeted and ruffled its feathers, before hopping off and flying back to one of the trees.
“If you need help tomorrow, just ask to be lead.”, he told her then, smiling at Nox. He was happy that she wanted to come back to him.

“Until tomorrow then, Nox.”.

“Goodbye Elvin.” Nox said as the bird flew around her “Enjoy the rest of your day” she waved as she left the opening. Her smile never left, even when she got to the edge of the forest.

She put her hand out and the little bird landed on it.

“Thank you” she said before rubbing the top of it’s head gently. She watched as it tweeted happily before flying away.

She hummed a happy tune as she walked home, looking forward to seeing the forest god again tomorrow. She wondered what he would get up to until then.

Elvin was very happy that Nox was going to visit him again. There wasn’t a lot he did normally, just taking care of his forest. He loved his forest, and there was nothing he would prefer doing.

A lot of the time, he was just lazing around though. But for today, he was going to visit the hurt tree and help it heal, and visit the new sapling Nox had brought and planted.
