Gone

Markus kept his gaze on Oliver for a while, before closing his eyes. He was getting tired again, and he felt incredibly hot again. He didn’t feel well, he almost had forgotten it while they had talked.

He didn’t notice Oliver staring, and even if he had, he didn’t mind. He was used to getting stared at by various people for various reasons. He was just glad Oliver was here with him, that he had company as nice as he was.

Eventually, he stood up, letting go of his companion’s hand. ’ Companion ’ sounded like the best way to describe Markus. They weren’t quite friends but he couldn’t say that he didn’t like him at all.

“Rest. I’m going to get the herbs for you now, but I’ll be back later. I promise.”, he informed him, grabbing his bag. He had been provided with a key. Since Markus should be asleep, he didn’t see an issue with locking the door behind him as he left the small house.

“I’ll try. Thank you..”, Markus mumbled and nodded lightly. He’d worry about getting the strips of fabric from Oliver damp with cool water later.

He listened to Oliver leave, before shifting to lay on his back, making breathing easier. He did manage to fall asleep after some time, though rest wasn’t easy. Both his fever and insomnia made it hard.

Markus looked up to Oliver when he felt his hands on his own. He hummed softly and nodded. “No one can understand another one’s life.”, he mumbled. They were so different too, Markus was aware. He was royalty, a king, and what was Oliver even? A citizen, a criminal maybe. Nothing Markus would ever even begin to grasp.

“People do bad things, thinking it’s for the best…”, he murmured quietly. It was pretty much the only thing he had been able to hear when he had been kidnapped and transported around. Someone wanted to rule his kingdom, because he was so inexperienced. Something Markus technically understood -he was inexperienced, and had no self-confidence as king- though knew the method of trying to get his kingdom a “better” leader was bad.

Markus smiled lightly and nodded. He enjoyed being with Oliver, and being honest with him. He never minded it, and was always so kind and understanding. It made him happy to know.

“Thank you.”, he said quietly, for a lot of reasons. He was glad Oliver was here, and took care of him. He wouldn’t be here without his help.

Markus still felt responsible. He nodded lightly, seeing that Oliver wasn’t going to give up, and he didn’t want to argue either.

“I’ll lay down..”, he mumbled softly. He would worry anyways, because that was just how it was. He worried about every little thing, because he was taught to be perfect, so he had to be. Being a burden was exactly what he wasn’t supposed to be.

He carefully walked off then, easily finding a place to lay down. He curled up tightly, trying to block out these harmful thoughts. It made his mind spiral down bad paths.

“…Markus, I’m sorry for sounding harsher than I probably should. I just want you to get better so that we can travel. Didn’t you say that you wanted to?”, he said in a softer tone, sitting down beside him. He couldn’t understand what had made Markus so upset, so he had assumed that it was something that he had done.

Oliver wasn’t willing to leave until he knew that Markus was alright. He wasn’t a child, Oliver knew that Markus wasn’t likely to instantly get worse as soon as he left his side, but he was still careful.

“I’d love to travel with you.”, Markus replied quietly. “I just… feel like a big burden for you… I was taught to be perfect, and not be a bother. Even in the castle… I felt like a burden to the doctors, when I was sick…”. At least he didn’t feel like he couldn’t eat Oliver the truth. He normally wouldn’t be so open about things, but Oliver was easy to talk to. Just because Oliver treated him like a person.

“You didn’t upset me. I just… don’t want to argue over something like that.”, he mumbled. He didn’t like arguing in general, but even less so if it was something that needed no arguing.

Markus gladly held onto Oliver’s hand, walking with him. He kept close to the other, keeping his gaze on the ground. He wasn’t used to being so close to someone, anyone caring about him. No matter what motive Oliver had, if he had any. It was nice to have someone, even if it was just for a shorter while.

“Thank you.”, he said softly as they walked inside. He just needed a bed for now, and a bowl with cold water, and cloths. He remembered he should drink a lot of tea too, to help his health.

He softly told Oliver what he needed and had to do -the cold damp cloths on his forehead and around his shins, the herbs for tea- needing his help with it all.

“I’ll buy enough herbs to last at least a few days. We can use the water we already have.”, he muttered, considering how much money he had left. Taking care of himself – when he cared to do so – was much easier than looking after someone else.

He took a shirt from his bag, only a spare, and tore the arms of it to get the fabric. Cloth was relatively expensive, and he didn’t want to have to buy it. The shirt was clean, though, so it would work. “…well, it’s something.”

“I’m sorry..”, Markus mumbled softly. “You don’t have to buy anything. I’ll be fine without.”, he really didn’t want to rob Oliver of anything, especially money-wise. He could tell Oliver didn’t have a lot, and since Markus had nothing at all, he couldn’t help in the slightest. He felt bad for burdening Oliver.

“Ill… just lay down.. Please don’t make living hard for yourself for me..”. He’d feel terrible if Oliver had to, just because Markus couldn’t take care of himself.

He was… someone. Or no one, if that was preferred. That was all that he particularly wanted anyone to know. He was technically a wanted man, but he attempted to distance himself from everything since his younger brother had gone missing. Gone missing, run away, or was killed. He didn’t know. Oliver didn’t even have a last name, or at least one he remembered.

“…and sometimes people do good with the worst intentions.”, he completed, although it wasn’t a phrase that required completion. It was something he had heard before, perhaps with different words, but the concept was the same. “Do you want me to leave you to sleep now, or do they need me to take you to where I’m staying?”

Markus huffed softly, smiling lightly as Oliver completed the sentiment. He knew. He wished people weren’t so complicated, a lot of the time. Not that he could change people drastically to be as he’d like them to be. As he thought would be good.

“If you want to take me elsewhere.”, he replied quietly. He’d have to at one point or another anyways, and the cloth on his forehead was getting warm. He needed to drench it into cold water again -the doctors had told him what to do, since they weren’t sure if Oliver would be there again or not.

People were needlessly complicated. It made sense to Oliver that he only had to interact with them when he had to. But he still became lonely, sometimes. He used to have his brothers, and now he had Markus. That was all he wanted.

“Can you walk?”, he asked, closing his fingers around Markus’s hand to hold it properly. There was a small smile on his face. Traveling with Markus didn’t seem like a terrible prospect. Of course, in the countryside he would have to hunt or collect food for two people, but that wasn’t usually a setback.

“If it’s not far I should manage.”, Markus replied, smiling lightly as Oliver held his hand. He carefully sat up, pulling off the cloth from his forehead and from around his legs -all three there to help cool his body. He did drink some more water from his glass, before carefully standing up.

He looked like a beggar, almost. With his clothes ragged -not even his anymore- bare footed, and somewhat dirty. Just being drenched in water didn’t clean after all. His skin was somewhat tanned still, or just naturally that shade, but white patches of skin decorated him. Most prominent over his eyes, covering them, and a bit of his ears and cheeks.
