in all honesty, chase was at a loss of words. he came out her to possibly to end his life, got saved by some merman, and now this merman wanted to be his friend. unable to wrap his head around all of this, he burst into laughter that soon turned to violent coughing. “im hallucinating. i have to be. this isn’t real.” he whispered, his eyes watering from the coughs. -meranaon

“I’m pretty sure I’m real.”, Markus hummed. He reached out of the water to Chase, to poke him.
“And my name is Markus.”, he said and smiled. “At least it’s the human equivalent of what my name is.”

“not exactly wanting myself to sound so cliché; its not that simple. you probably don’t understand.. “us”… but some of “us” have mind diseases. i, myself, have an invisible cloud above my head that feeds me self-deprecating thoughts.” chase spat, not meaning to let it out. “sometimes that cloud convinces pretty fuckin well if ya ask me.” -meranon

“Well, if you don’t have anyone to speak against the cloud, then let me be your friend.”, Markus replied. He understood illnesses, even if he didn’t understand how they worked or why they existed.

“I don’t want you to die. Really. Even if humans want me captured and some want me dead. I like humans, you’re very interesting creatures. I’d like to be able to talk to you.”.

optimism failing him, he let out a dark chuckle, his strength coming back to him in sessions. “why? i came out here wondering if tonight’s the night and it almost was. /they/ won’t care if im gone or not.” he growled with the saltiness level of the water around them, not aiming the hate at the merman. -meranon

“There must be someone who cares.”, Markus laid his arms onto the edge of the boat, seeing how Chase didn’t seem to want to leave yet.
“I don’t want you to die. Isn’t that enough?”. He didn’t understand humans, even though he knew their language.

chase mutter an apology when he saw the mermaid flinch, climbing into the boat. shivering, he hugged himself, looking down at the mythical creature. “what…what the hell are you?” he managed to say, the words coming out as a whisper since not only the fight tore up his throat, but the salt warer as well. -meranon

“I’m a merman.”, Markus replied and smiled lightly, helping Chase into the boat as best as he could.
“You should go back to the land. I can’t help you more than I already did.”. The sea was calm again, and Chase should be able to get back to land by himself.

hearing his voice, a sense of peace lapped at his soul. he finally got a good look at his rescuer, seeing his fish and human like qualities he felt… scared but memorized. reaching out, he lightly touched the glowing markings on the mermaids face. chase was at a loss of words, completely bewildered. a tiny “holy shit” escaped his mouth, not really believing what he was seeing. -meranon

Markus flinched when Chase touched his face, not expecting it. He made some clicking sounds again, something all merfolk could do, until he found where Chase’s boat was. He carefully swam towards it.

“Get into your boat again. You’ll freeze.”.

panic shot through him once more as he felt the arms around him and the sound of the faint clicking only further increasing his anxiety. he tried to fight back but couldn’t really do that much since trying to save his own life didn’t go so well. when the creature got him to air, he coughed and sputtered, trying to get air back into lungs. regaining his senses, he realized what had grabbed him. panic left him, replaced with fear. something with mermaid like qualities was holding him. -meranon

“It’s okay. You’re safe.”, Markus’ voice was melodic, almost hypnotizing. But only almost. As long as he didn’t want it to be, his voice was just his voice, and not used to trap a human in it.

“Where’s your boat?”. He had an easy time holding Chase above the water, no matter the waves. He was stronger than the ocean.

this continued on for about a minute or two until he eventually slowed down. thoughts of just letting go and giving up filled his head. ‘this is it.,’ he said in his head, not wanting to drown any quicker than he already was, ‘i’ll die out here and no one will even know.’ accepting his fate, he allowed the water to enter his mouth. no one would care anyway.-meranon

When the human’s efforts ceased, Markus swam closer. Quiet clicking noises filled the water, probably barely even audible for the human, as Markus used the echo of them for himself as help to know where he was going.

When he was close to the human, he pulled them into his arms and swam up, bringing them both above the surface. He didn’t know if they were still conscious or not, but he hoped the human would breathe.

a scream had erupted from him, sounding raspy from the fight before. as he hit the surface, water filling his mouth almost immediately. waves engulfed him as he thrashed frantically. the funny thing was, as much as the water calmed him down, he had a fear of what lurked in the dark deep down deep dark.-meranon

Markus noticed it must be a human. The trashing of it, desperate attempts to get above the surface again, to the air. Could they not swim? Worry filled him -he wasn’t going to take advantage of someone drowning when he could safe them! But he also didn’t want to risk being seen just yet. Surely the human would be able to swim up again..

moon-lit waves lapping at the side of his boat was the only thing chase could register. his eyes were red and slightly puffy from crying. he had just gotten out of a fight that sent him off the edge and caused him to have an anxiety attack. taking his boat out on the water was the only real escape from his world on land. sniffling from the cold, he wiped his eyes a bit too quickly and the boat swayed. a surge of panic shot through him as he moved to stabilize it, only to fall in. -meranon

The merman loved stormy nights. He loved feeling the rain on his skin, letting the turbulent waves pull him along this way and that. And at night, he was at a much less risk of people seeing him and attacking him. He was blinded thanks to humans, thick scars over his eyes.

He was just beneath the surface of the ocean as it calmed, enjoying it greatly to just let himself be. That was until something fell into the ocean and sank. He kept away at first, not sure what it could be. Scales on his body glowing golden.
